Give Life Back To Music

I've made a huge mistake.

I added this picture before writing anything.

This will be a hard blog to write - I can tell this picture is going to distract me the entire time. It's just so... shiny. Just look at that sequin.

Daft Punk is back. After 8 long years of cool stuff that doesn't remotely compare to their studio work, the robots have returned. And they've revamped their style (again.) Of course, it's not unusual for the androids to change their sound. Each of their albums so far has been wildly different than the last. Enter disco.

Yeah, I thought Discovery was very disco. (See what I did there? Haha! Actually, that was the original intent. Discovery is loaded with subtle genius. "Veridis Quo," pronounced similarly to, "very disco," can be separated into, "veri dis quo,"  meaning, "the true gods," in Latin. I love these guys.) But now that "Get Lucky" is out and I've listened to it a billion times and counting, I'm ready to bust out the bell-bottoms.

Okay, that's a lie. There are parts of disco that need to stay buried deep within the confines of the 70s. But there's just something about disco that gets me excited. It's like Daft Punk knew exactly what I like about the dormant genre and decided to pull the best bits from it. Punchy, mobile bass. Upbeat drums. Funky, twangy rhythm guitar (damn, did they make a good call collaborating with Nile Rodgers here. I'm not even sure whether I'm a bigger fan of Nile or Daft Punk in this song.) It's mostly the bass that does it for me. As a bassist myself, I love it when I hear the bass get a prominent, fun role in a song.

Pharrell Williams does a good job, too. I found myself thinking, "Hey, Pharrell, buddy, you sound great, but can I just listen to Daft Punk for a bit?" I think I'll be more satisfied with the full release.

Anyway, back to disco.

I tell people I don't dance. I just don't have the coordination to feel like I'm doing anything right when I'm dragged onto the dance floor at parties, proms, wherever. I'm lying when I say this. I dance. But only to things with a groove strong enough to move me. Rap, hip hop, and now EDM, the most popular things to dance to nowadays, just don't do it for me. Especially this "Wobble" crap. You don't look like you're dancing, you look like you should be in a wheelchair. None of it has any spirit. Boats n Hoes. The driving force of our generation, apparently. But to me, it doesn't feel fun. There's a certain level of angst in most modern music that just doesn't resonate with me.

Disco, though. That stuff has a funky groove that I just can't help but swing my hips to. I don't even care how bad I look, and that's the thing. It's the same sort of dancing I'd do to anything else, but I feel natural doing it. Just having a good time moving to the beat. It's not about impressing anyone, it's about having pure fun.

Daft Punk, I hope, will bring disco-funk back to the mainstream. I'm sick of all this soulless auto-tuned, computer-looped stuff with no real emotion. "Get Lucky" has taken off and I hope other artists follow suit. It's time to get our groove on again.
